This was earlier posted by Maple, but I'm reposting it here. =]
Clan Leader The Clan Leader is the cat who leads the Clan. One of the first obligations of a new leader is to take a trip to the Moonstone or Moonpool. There, they receive their nine lives and name, always ending with -star, in honor of StarClan. Bluestar, Leopardstar, Onestar, Tigerstar and Firestar are examples of leaders.
[edit] Deputy The cat who is second-in-command to the Clan leader; the deputy is in charge of organizing patrols and hunting parties, and succeeds the leader after he/she loses all nine lives from battle, age, or sickness; in the case that the deputy dies, the leader must appoint a new deputy before moonhigh. (midnight) Graystripe, Brambleclaw, Russetfur, Ashfoot and Mistyfoot are examples of deputies.
[edit] Medicine Cat A medicine cat is trained specifically in the ways of healing (but that does not mean they can't fight); receives messages from StarClan and interprets them; medicine cats stand outside of the rivalries between the Clans. A medicine cat will heal an injured cat and can order even the leader what to do. Each Clan has either one or two medicine cats; they are not allowed to take a mate or have kits (however Yellowfang was the mother of Brokentail); sometimes, fully trained warriors can become an apprentice to a medicine cat, as was the case of Mothwing. Yellowfang and Spottedleaf are examples of medicine cats.
[edit] Warrior A cat (tom or she-cat who isn't nursing kits) trained in the ways of combat; warriors defend, hunt, and fight for their Clan; they also are in charge of training apprentices to become warriors; a warrior may only have one apprentice at a time, although they may supervise the training of apprentices lacking mentors. Crowfeather, Webfoot, Blackclaw, Spiderleg, Runningwind, Fireheart, Sandstorm, Graystripe, Rowanclaw, and Squirrelflight are examples of warriors.
[edit] Queen A she-cat expecting or nursing kits; they stay in the nursery until their kits become apprentices (Squirrelflight left to assume warrior duties when the kits were weaned), then return to their warrior duties. In the first books in the Original Series, however, it was used to describe all she-cats. Ferncloud and Goldenflower are examples of queens. They may also choose to stay a queen even after their kits grow to six moons of age to help other queens or because these she-cats don't like to fight. Ferncloud, Daisy, and Speckletail are examples of queens that did this.
[edit] Apprentice A cat who, at six moons old, begins training to become a warrior or medicine cat; they train daily to practice battle and hunting skills, and also care for the elders; one task they usually do is fetch bedding; their names end with -paw; they become warriors when their mentor and leader feel that they are ready. Hazelpaw, Dapplepaw, and Jaypaw are examples of apprentices.
[edit] Kit A kitten, not yet old enough to be an apprentice (six moons old); they are not allowed to hunt or leave the camp alone; very young kits do not normally leave the nursery, however, older kits are allowed to do so; their names always end with -kit. Snowkit, Icekit, and Foxkit are examples of kits.
[edit] Elder A retired warrior, queen, medicine cat, deputy or leader; elders are usually cared for by apprentices. They amuse apprentices and kits by telling them stories of times past, however, the elders still fight and defend the nursery during raids. Heavystep, Mousefur, and One-eye are examples of elders.
[edit] Other Ranks (outside of the immediate Clan ranks)
[edit] Loner A cat that lives neither with a Clan or with humans, normally used to describe a friendly rogue. Some examples of loners are Barley, Purdy, and Ravenpaw.
[edit] Rogue Another term for loner, but more offensive; a cat, usually more hostile than a loner, who is part of no Clan, or a cat who was exiled from his original Clan; rogues will sometimes live with other rogues, but they generally travel alone or with their mate. An example of a rogue is Sasha and a few of the current ShadowClan warriors.
[edit] Kittypet A cat that lives with humans, usually do not go into the forest. Firestar was a kittypet named Rusty before he wandered out into the forest one day. Other examples of kittypets are Princess, Smudge, and Cody.

[edit] History of the Clans According to Secrets of the Clans, cats came into the forest. They traveled in small groups, but weren't Clans yet. There were many battles for food and territory, but there was no warrior code or StarClan to honor. Eventually, when the cats gathered around at Fourtrees, cats fought. Many cats died that night. When the cats alive awoke, they saw the spirits of their deceased loved ones. They told them that they had to unite or die. Four cats, Shadow, Wind, Thunder, and River all thought that they should be the leader of the united group of cats. The dead spirits told them to divide the territory among them. They told them to bring their Clans to Fourtrees at the next full moon, and then they would be given eight more lives. They told them to decide a warrior code. Thunder, River, Wind, and Shadow agreed and did what the new StarClan told them to.
[edit] The Clans The five Clans of forest cats are ThunderClan, ShadowClan, WindClan, RiverClan, and StarClan. Although BloodClan was called a Clan, it was not a true Clan because of its cats' disbelief in StarClan and the warrior code. There is a sixth Clan, called SkyClan, though they don't live anywere near the forest Clans. SkyClan used to live in the forest long ago, but it was driven out by the other four.
[edit] ThunderClan Main article: List of ThunderClan Cats ThunderClan is the most prominent Clan in the novels. They are said to have the most loyal warriors and the bravest. Many of the novels' protagonists are from ThunderClan. The hero of the first six books, Firestar, lives in this Clan and (later on) leads it. In addition, other main characters from the original six novels like Graystripe, Sandstorm, Spottedleaf, and Cinderpelt are from this Clan. In the second series, three of the protagonists: Brambleclaw, Squirrelflight, and Leafpool are from ThunderClan. All the novels are told from the perspective of ThunderClan as well, with the exception of Moonrise, when the Clans are not active parts of the story. In addition, several prologues are told from the perspective of other Clans. Also, ThunderClan has welcomed more kittypets and loners into the Clan, starting with Rusty (Firestar) than any other Clan.
ThunderClan is at home inside a forest where their main prey is squirrels, mice, voles, rabbits, and birds. The name ThunderClan came from their first leader, Thunder, and the fact that they live by a Thunderpath (as the official Warriors website says).
An interesting note is that by the end of the second series, ThunderClan has had the most medicine cats (Spottedleaf, Yellowfang, Cinderpelt, and Leafpool), and the most deputies.
Ceremonies All the Clans have special ceremonies to promote and demote cats.
[edit] Leader's Call "Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey join here beneath the Highrock/ledge for a Clan meeting."
[edit] Apprentice Ceremony --- These are samples ---
"Birchkit, from now on, you shall be known as Birchpaw. Ashfur, you are ready for an apprentice. You will be Birchpaw's mentor.
"Ashfur, you have known grief and hardship. I expect you to pass on all your skills to Birchpaw, so that he may be an honorable warrior of ThunderClan."
Clan calls apprentice by new name, and mentor and apprentice touch noses.*
[edit] Warrior Ceremony "Sandstorm, are you satisfied that this apprentice is ready to become a warrior?"
"Yes, she is ready."
"I, Firestar, leader of ThunderClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down upon this apprentice. She has trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend her a warrior in her turn. Sorrelpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code, and protect and defend this Clan, even at the cost of your life?"
"I do."
"Then by the powers of StarClan, I give you your warrior name. Sorrelpaw, from this moment on you shall be known as Sorreltail. The Clan honors you for your courage and patience, and we welcome you as a full warrior of ThunderClan."
Leader rests muzzle on new warrior, and warrior licks shoulder in return. The Clan calls new warrior by name, then the warrior sits silent vigil that night.*
[edit] Deputy Ceremony "I say this before StarClan, so that the spirits of our ancestors, and Graystripe's spirit, wherever he may be, to hear and approve my choice.
Brambleclaw will be the new deputy of ThunderClan."
Clan calls deputy's name*
[edit] New Name Ceremony "I call upon my warrior ancestors to take away the name of this cat. It no longer stands for who she is. Lostface, from now on, you shall be known as Brightheart."
Clan calls new name.*
[edit] Medicine Cat Apprentice Ceremony (In the Moonpool/stone at half-moon, the medicine cat gives ceremony)
"Willowpaw, is it your wish to enter the mysteries of a medicine cat?"
"It is."
"Then come forward. Warriors of StarClan, I present to you this apprentice. She has chosen the path of a medicine cat. Grant her your wisdom and insight, so that she may understand your ways and heal her Clan in accordance with your will. Now, crouch down and drink from the pool."
Apprentice obeys, and has her own dreams with StarClan.*
[edit] Medicine Cat Ceremony (at Moonpool/stone at half-moon, medicine cat gives ceremony)
"I, Cinderpelt, medicine cat of ThunderClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down upon this apprentice. She has trained hard to understand the way of a medicine cat, and with your help, she will serve her Clan for many moons. Leafpaw, do you promise to uphold the ways of a medicine cat, to stand apart from rivalry between Clan and Clan, and to protect all cats equally, even at the cost of your life?"
"I do."
"Then by the powers of StarClan, I give you your true medicine cat name. Leafpaw, from this moment on, you shall be known as Leafpool. You have proved to be a true medicine cat by finding the Moonpool."
All medicine cats call new name.*
[edit] Elder Ceremony "Mousefur, Is it your wish to give up the name of warrior and go to join the elders?"
"It is."
"Your Clan honors you and all the service you have given us. I call upon StarClan to give you many seasons of rest."
Clan calls cat by name.*
[edit] Leader Naming Ceremony The leader is given his/her lives by cats he/she knew. The gifts are similar, but some are different than Firestar's and Leafstar's.
[edit] Firestar's lives #1 Lionheart gave the life with the gift of courage, to defend his Clan.
#2 Redtail gave him the life with the gift of justice, to judge his Clan fairly.
#3 Silverstream gave him the life with the gift of loyalty to what he knows to be right.
#4 Runningwind gave Firestar the life with the gift of tireless energy, so he could serve his Clan to the utmost.
#5 Brindleface gave Firestar the life with the desire to protect his Clan, as a queen would protect her kits.
#6 Swiftpaw gave him the life with the gift of mentoring.
#7 Yellowfang gave the life with the gift of compassion, the compassion like a medicine cat to his/her clan.
#8 Spottedleaf gave him the life with the gift of love.
#9 Bluestar gave him his last life, along with the gifts of nobility, certainty, and faith, so that he would be able to lead his Clan in the way of the warrior code for all of his nine lives.
[edit] Leafstar's lives #1 Cloudstar gave her the life with the gift of endurance, to strengthen her clan in times of trouble.
#2 Skywatcher gave her the live with the gift of hope, to guide her clan through the darkest days.
#3 Leafdapple's mother Gave her the life with the gift of love, towards all the cats who look to her for protection.
#4 Spottedleaf gave her the life with the gift of healing wounds caused by words and rivalry, towards all cats troubled in spirit.
#5 Redstar gave her the life with the gift of wisdom, for when she has the hardest decisions of all to make.
#6 Birchstar gave her the life with the gift of sympathy and understanding towards the weakest in her clan and all others who need help and protection.
#7 Swiftstar gave her the life with the gift of selflessness, to use in the service of her clan.
#8 Dawnstar gave her the life with the gift of determination, to set her paws on the path she knows to be right.
#9 Birdflight gave her the life with the gift of faithfullness to hold fast to clan and kin. Kits At the lowest level are kits. Their name always ends in "-kit". These are cats younger than six moons old. They are restricted due to their age and are not permitted to leave the camp without parental supervision. It is against the warrior code for kits to hunt. They have no duties in the Clan, and spend most of their time playing with each other in mock fights or they play alone with moss balls, leaves, or puddles. After their sixth moon, a kit is made an apprentice, and given to a warrior to mentor them.
After Raggedstar's death (during Brokenstar's leadership from before and during most of Into the Wild), Brokenstar had ShadowClan's kits begin their training at three moons of age, and he named them full warriors at five moons.
[edit] Apprentices When a kit reaches six moons old, they are apprenticed. Their name, which formerly ended in "-kit", now ends with "-paw". They are assigned a mentor, who can be a warrior, deputy, medicine cat (if the apprentice plans to become the next medicine cat), or even the leader (Firestar was Brambleclaw's mentor, for instance, however, the leader's apprentice doesn't necessarily be deputy or leader) Apprentices also care for the elders in their Clan. They are allowed to travel within Clan territory, either alone or with their mentor, and are also allowed to go to the Gathering at full-moons, if they are permitted by their leader and mentor.
After several moons of training, and a journey to the Moonstone/Moonpool, the apprentice of a warrior is given a new name and proclaimed a full warrior of their Clan. Traditionally, the new warrior's first task is to hold vigil and stand guard over the camp all night until dawn. The average apprenticeship, no matter which type, lasts from about four to eight moons.
When it comes to a medicine cat apprentice, they have much different training than warrior apprentices, as they must learn how to heal their Clanmates and understand signs from StarClan. Also unlike a warrior apprentice, a medicine cat apprentice is given their full name at the Moonstone/Moonpool by their mentor, in the presence of the other Clans' medicine cats. Although a medicine cat apprentice can be given their full name, they will still considered the apprentice of the current medicine cat until they succeed their mentor.
[edit] Queens Queens are she-cats expecting or nursing kits. They stay in the nursery until their kits are apprenticed, then return to being warriors. Queens are not entirely restricted to the nursery or the camp. They are allowed to go hunting and a queen may also take her kits out of camp for a short while. A queen has the right to keep the identity of her kits' father a secret, even from the leader or the kits themselves, as Bluestar did with her kits, Stonefur and Mistyfoot. Goldenflower also hid the identity of Brambleclaw and Tawnypelt's father for a while when they were still small, though she hid from the two kits, not the Clan. Silverstream had planned to hide the identity of Stormfur's and Feathertail's father, who was Graystripe, before she died bearing them.
Naturally, the queens' den is close to the medicine cat's den, so that the medicine cat can give them herbs if one goes into labor.
[edit] Warriors Warriors are cats that do most of the work for the Clan, such as hunting, patrolling borders, training apprentices, and discussing most gathering matters. They are toms and she-cats who are not caring for kits. Previously, their names ended with "-paw", but now change to different things such as body parts (tail, ear, claw, fur, pelt, foot, tooth, fang, eyes, nose, stripe, throat, whisker, wing, feather, belly, heart, spots, face, leg, song, dapple), surroundings (pool, stream, leaf, flower, brook, poppy, berry, bird), movement (flight, step, fall, watcher), or weather (storm, frost, wind, cloud).
Warriors are some of the most important cats in the Clan. They hunt daily, patrol borders, train apprentices, defend their Clan, and fight for their Clan even at the cost of their own lives. Warriors follow the warrior code. A warrior is only given one apprentice at a time, although they are permitted to train other apprentices. For example, although Lionheart was already mentoring Graystripe, he also shared Firestar's training with Tigerclaw for a time, until Firestar was given a permanent mentor. Warriors may also have kits.
Being a warrior is usually the longest period of time in a Clan cat's life, unless they are the medicine cat, leader, or promoted to deputy. A she-cat can also choose to stay as a queen and look after kits in the nursery until they retire, like Goldenflower.
[edit] Elders Elders are retired warriors, deputies, and medicine cats. Instances of Clan leaders dying of old age (such as Crookedstar and Tallstar) show that leaders do not retire their positions. They are very respected and are cared for usually by apprentices. The elders' only known duties are to perform the burial of a deceased Clanmate and defend the nursery in fierce battle when their camp is attacked. They often give advice to the Clan leader and share stories of passed events with the younger cats.
A warrior becomes an elder when they have reached an age where they cannot keep up with warrior duties, or for other reasons that force them to retire early. Examples of this are failing sight (as was Longtail's case), hearing loss or deafness (Snowkit was an example of this), and serious injury (such as Brightheart and Cinderpelt's former situations).
[edit] Medicine Cat One of the most respected cats in the Clan is the medicine cat, who not only heals the cats of the Clan, but interprets signs from StarClan to receive advice and prophecies. Medicine cats seem to have their own code, much like the warrior code. They walk closer with StarClan than even leaders, and very few cats will argue with a medicine cat. Medicine cats are forbidden to have kits or take mates, possibly because it could be a distraction from their duties. It seems that neither gender of medicine cat is an exception to the rule. A warrior who later becomes a medicine cat is also forbidden from having any additional kits.
Every half-moon, medicine cats travel to share dreams with StarClan. They also have to go to the Moonstone or Moonpool area. If for some reason there is no Clan deputy to take over leadership after the current leader is not with the Clan (i.e. Brokentail's exile with Blackfoot), the medicine cat asks StarClan who the new leader should be.
[edit] Deputy Directly below the leader is the deputy, who organizes everyday activities in the Clan, such as patrols. The only requirement to become a deputy is to have mentored at least one apprentice. StarClan can also send visions that in some way suggest who the next deputy should be, even if that cat has never mentored an apprentice. The leader decides who the deputy would be if the former deputy is killed or injured badly. However, they can retire, in the case of Tawnyspots, the ThunderClan deputy before Bluestar.
A new deputy is chosen if the current one is captured, driven into exile, blinded, killed, retired, or some other thing that renders them unable to do their tasks. The decision must be made before the moonhigh (midnight) of the night of the current deputy's resignation. Sometimes the medicine cat of a Clan will receive a sign from StarClan saying who the new deputy should be. The deputy is usually a senior warrior and therefore is an experienced cat. The deputy is next in line to become leader, should the current leader lose all nine of their lives.
[edit] Leader At the top of the Clan is the leader, whose name always ends with "-star". This cat is usually the former deputy, who took over after the previous leader died. In special cases, like those of Nightstar and Tigerstar, non-deputies of the Clan can inherit the position of leader.
Leaders must commune with StarClan personally to receive their leader name and the special gift to leaders from StarClan: nine lives. Every time a leader is killed, StarClan heals the wound that killed them and returns them to life. Sometimes, however, the wound is too grievous to heal, in the case of Tigerstar, who lost all of his nine lives at once, or in the case of what would have happened when Firestar was in the fox trap, had Brambleclaw tightened the loop. On the night of a new moon, leaders travel to share dreams with StarClan. In special cases, as with Nightstar, cats who may not have been chosen by StarClan may not receive their nine lives. Instead, they remain with only one life.
Leaders decide the warrior cat names for an apprentice before their warrior ceremony and is the one who makes most announcements through Clan meetings from a designated spot; in ThunderClan it was the Highrock/Highledge. They also arrange hunting and border patrols with the deputy. Leaders do not usually retire.
[edit] The Warrior Code The warrior code is a series of strict laws laid down by StarClan for all of the Clans to follow. While the exact code is not listed anywhere, it is clear to all Clans what the rules in the warrior code are. There are countless other laws in the warrior code. If warriors break this code, a punishment, whether it be from a duty involving caring for the elders to exile to even death, will undoubtedly result. The punishment depends on the severity of the broken code and the Clan leader themself. For example, if an apprentice had been caught eating during a hunting mission, they may be punished simply by not being allowed to take any fresh-kill for the rest of the day. Another example could be if a cat betrayed their Clan. The Clan leader may decide to exile them as proper punishment.
As written in Secrets of the Clans, the tenets warrior code are:
Defend your Clan, even with your life. You may have friendships with cats from other Clans, but your loyalty must remain to your Clan, as one day you may meet them in battle. One should never hunt or trespass on another Clan's territory. Punishment: Most cats are attacked if found. Elders and kits must be fed before apprentices and warriors. Unless they have permission, apprentices may not eat until they have hunted to feed the elders. Punishment: The offender is usually given no food for the rest of the day. Prey is killed only to be eaten. Give thanks to StarClan for its life. A kit must be at least six moons old to become an apprentice. Newly appointed warriors will keep a silent vigil for one night after receiving their warrior name. A cat cannot be made deputy without having mentored at least one apprentice. The deputy will become Clan leader when the leader dies or retires. After the death or retirement of the deputy, the new deputy must be chosen before moonhigh. A gathering of all four Clans is held at the full moon during a truce that lasts for the night. There shall be no fighting among the Clans at this time. Boundaries must be checked and marked. Challenge all trespassing cats. No warrior may neglect a kit in pain or in danger, even if that kit is from a different Clan. The word of the Clan leader is the warrior code. An honorable warrior does not need to kill other cats to win his battles, unless they are outside the warrior code or it is necessary for self-defense. A warrior rejects the soft life of a kittypet.
